Steve's Cycling Page

I've ridden the MS150 Houston-Austin tour three years, 1996, 1997 and 1998 -- without walking the bike up any of the hills! Score Me: 450, Hills 0. Actually the first day of '98 ride was miserable - it rain was was chilly (somewhere around 40F). So, I quit at lunch -- along with about half the other riders. I regret doing so now, because it turned out that just an hour down the road the sun came out and it warmed up and turned out to be a beautiful day. The second day ways awesome, though, one of the best cycling days I've ever had.

Now I live in Portland, Oregon. I managed to join the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club for one ride before the weather got too wintry for my taste in late '98. There was one hill of significance, and ... I need more training or a 3-ring chainwheel. It was nice, though; a little light rain, a little sun, no wind for all practical purposes.

About My Mount

By now you might conclude I have some multi-thousand dollar unobtanium rig with pencil thin wheels and teardrop-shaped down tube. Nope, I have a 4 year old Peugeot with a 2-ring chainwheel and 6-ring freewheel. It's plain old chrome/moly steel. I do have a nice seat though, butt pain being what it is on long rides. A new ride would be nice, and now that I'm working I could afford it, but really -- I should just train more.
